START A HELP KENYA CLUB

Help Kenya Project already has several self-administered High School Clubs currently organizing in Westchester County.  We will give you all the support you need but they key is that it is your club.

The first step is to get a group of people together who are interested in forming the Club.  The principle mission is to collect used computer equipment so that the hard drives can be expunged, reformatted, and then sent to Kenya for the schoolchildren.  Here are some ideas for getting a running start:

  • Send out emails to everyone your group knows.
If a School group: to all students in your School District, in your school, the middle school, and the elementary school, your places of worship, neighbors, friends, family and maybe even to all your parents' workplaces.

If a Corporation, Business, or Community Group: to everyone in your workplace, schools, universities, places of worship, neighbors, friends, and family.  Ask them if they have any used computer equipment (as specified on the website) that they might have sitting around and going unused at home or at work.

  • Choose one person's home (if a School group) or an area in your workplace, Community Center, places of worship (if a Corporation, Business or Community Group) and get permission (if School Group) for a secure and central Drop-Off location for all the donations to be brought to.

  • Appoint one or two people to be responsible for receiving the emails and phone calls from people who want to donate equipment and then follow up with emails and phone calls about when the equipment will be available so that someone from the group can meet the person at the Drop-Off location and/or your group can choose drivers who are willing to pick up the equipment from individual donors and then transport the equipment to Children’s Village.

  • Monetary donations can be made online at www.helpkenyaproject.org with Pay Pal, or with a check made payable to Help Kenya Project and mailed to PO Box 284 Dobbs Ferry, New York 10522.
  • Please report names, addresses, type of equipment donated and emails of the donated equipment to Help Kenya Project’s Communication Director at communicationsdirector (at) helpkenyaproject.org. Once a donation notification is received by the Communications Director, a thank you note will be emailed or mailed directly to the donor.

  • Submit an article about HKP to your school newspaper (if a School club) and/or your local Community newspapers and/or even put up flyers in local businesses/on Community and Corporate bulletin boards soliciting for used computer equipment.

  • Write newsletters which will be put up on the website about the progress you are making as a group.

  • Organize a Fundraising or Friendraising Event to bring attention to your mission.  You can accomplish this by holding bake sales, car washes, etc. and then donating any proceeds from the event to HKP.

  • Feel free to use any of the social networking tools available to you and also use the CNN Heros videos available on the multimedia page when you send out emails. This demonstrates that what we are all doing is important work for not only Kenyan children, but the fact that we are “greening” the environment.

  • We have a 2-sided Fact Sheet which you can use to “market” HKP if you wish.  Please Click Here to download a copy.
