Teach in Kenya

Volunteer Opportunities

Sending computers and books to Kenyan schools can only do so much. Just as the need for school supplies is urgent, so is the need for skilled teachers. There are partiuclar shortages of English and Technology teachers. Therefore, the Help Kenya Project operates a program, in which we assist interested college students and recent graduates in finding teaching opportunities in Kenya. Most of these positions are located in Machakos district, which is a mostly rural area southeast of the capital city of Nairobi. The schools with the most urgent need for teachers are high schools with grades equivalent to U.S. grades 8-12.

This is an opportunity for young adults to travel abroad and learn about a new culture through volunteerism. You will contribute to a local community in a remarkably powerful way by teaching its children. Applicatants should have a passion for education and helping others. Additionally, they must both work well in teams and be self motivated.

To volunteer, one must be at least eighteen years of age and either a college student or college graduate. Ideal candidates would have a year to dedicate, from September to August of the following year. Alternatively, five-month periods from either January to May or June to October are also available. Accomodations will be provided by the schools. Specifics for living arrangements will be determined individually. Teaching positions are currently available in three subjects: English, Microsoft Office, and Programming.

English teachers must be able to demonstrate successful completion of college level English course(s). Completion of two or more English courses is desired. Humanities classes that involve significant writing may be appropriate substitutes.

Microsoft Office teachers must have a thorough familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Touch typing education is also included in this subject.

Programming teachers must be proficient in and able to teach at least one modern programming language. These include but are not limited to Visual C++, C++, Visual Basic 6, and Java. Successful completion of two or more programming courses is desired.

Other computer knowledge, including web design, software, hardware, and networking experience may also qualify an individual for a specific teaching position. All questions and applications should be sent to cstasko@hkenyaproject.org.

Together we can and will bring change.
